CITES CoP20 is the triennial assembly where Parties review implementation, propose listing amendments, and adopt resolutions to regulate international trade in endangered species. As the convention’s flagship event, it encompasses:

Decisions on Appendix I & II listings, determining trade protections for species.

Review and vetting of proposals from Parties, the Secretariat, and standing bodies.

Side events, stakeholder dialogues, scientific briefings, and media engagement.

Sponsored Delegates Project, ensuring participation from developing countries

Being CITES’s 50th anniversary CoP, this meeting carries symbolic importance and will include commemorations of five decades of treaty success .

Focus

CoP20’s core objectives are to ensure wildlife trade is legal, sustainable, and traceable, by: Reviewing species listings and trade permits, enhancing enforcement against illegal wildlife trade, adopting measures to strengthen non-detriment findings and traceability, and promoting science-based decision-making and increased engagement of Indigenous communities and civil society.
