There are careers built by design, and there are careers built by conviction. For Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, the journey from selling insurance policies to powering an entire continent is neither coincidence nor accident; it is a masterclass in purpose, patience, and the audacity to serve at scale.
Trained in insurance at the University of Lagos, Adesina entered the workforce selling risk mitigation to Nigerian businesses across multiple sectors.
Few could have predicted that those early conversations about protection and value would eventually translate into a vision that now reaches over 42 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
When he joined Sahara Group, his selling skills and project management acumen became the engine of a growing energy conglomerate, and Africa took notice.
Today, he chairs Ikeja Electric, the largest privately owned power distribution business in Sub-Saharan Africa. He also oversees Egbin Power Plc, Nigeria's largest thermal plant, which provides a quarter of the country's total generating capacity
In 2026, he was appointed to the Mission 300 Private Sector Council, a World Bank and African Development Bank initiative focusing on providing access to electricity for 300 million Africans by 2030.
However, perhaps what defines Kola Adesina most is what he says without needing a stage:
"You don't have to really advertise and make so much noise around the good you're doing. Just do it, because you're human."
With 70% of Africa's population under 30, he insists the continent's greatest resource is not oil or gas; it is its youth.
That belief is what makes this not just a career story, but one of Africa's greatest sustainability stories.
