“Obeahon Ohiwerei steps into Coronation Merchant Bank’s next chapter, carrying a career shaped by institution-building across African financial markets”

Written By Eyikojoka Diboku

Obeahon Ohiwerei arrives at Coronation Merchant Bank with more than three decades of stewardship, building institutions, leading teams and navigating the demanding intersections of growth, risk and trust.

Now, he takes charge of a bank entering its next decade with renewed capital and a clear sense of ambition.

His appointment matters beyond one boardroom. In Africa, where finance must increasingly connect commercial success with resilience, inclusion and responsible development.

Ohiwerei’s task is to turn institutional strength into value that endures, for clients, markets and communities.

A New Mandate Takes Shape

The moment is less ceremonial than it is consequential. In Lagos, where capital moves quickly but confidence is earned slowly, Obeahon Ohiwerei assumes leadership of Coronation Merchant Bank at a point when the institution is not starting from scratch; it is building from foundations already strengthened by recapitalisation, governance reforms and continued digital transformation.

Ohiwerei becomes the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer after the Central Bank of Nigeria's no-objection approval, succeeding Paul Abiagam.

He takes the helm of an institution founded in 2015 to serve Nigeria’s wholesale banking market through corporate and investment banking, private banking and wealth management, and global markets and treasury services.

There is a human weight to such transitions. A new chief executive does not simply inherit a title; he inherits the accumulated expectations of employees, clients, shareholders and the wider market.

In a sector built on promises about the future, leadership becomes the daily practice of making those promises believable.

A New Mandate Takes Shape

“I am honoured to join Coronation Merchant Bank at such an exciting point in its journey,” Ohiwerei said on his appointment. “We are building from a position of strength, supported by an exceptional team, a strong balance sheet and the confidence of our clients and shareholders.”

“We are building from a position of strength.” Obeahon Ohiwerei

The phrase is measured, but it carries a wider message. Continuity need not mean stillness.

Coronation Merchant Bank has completed a recapitalisation programme that lifted its paid-up capital to N50.26 billion. The bank has said it is the first and only Nigerian merchant bank with an international Fitch risk rating, rated B- with a stable outlook.

For Ohiwerei, the immediate challenge is to preserve the discipline that created this platform while widening its usefulness.

His appointment comes at a time when banking leaders are being asked to do more than allocate capital: they must help clients read uncertainty, manage risk and find investable pathways through a changing economy.

A Career Forged Across African Markets

His professional journey has transpired through some of the defining institutions and expansion moments in modern African banking.

Ohiwerei served as the pioneer Managing Director of UBA Ghana, Executive Director at Access Bank and Managing Director of Keystone Bank. These roles span corporate banking, institutional banking, operations, transformation, client coverage and risk management.

That breadth matters.

  • It suggests a career formed not in a single product line or market cycle, but in the practical work of building systems that can hold under pressure.

Before his Keystone Bank leadership, he was also co-founder and Group Deputy Managing Director of First Ally Capital, adding entrepreneurial experience to a career rooted in large financial institutions.

His academic grounding is in mathematics and business administration, with a BSc in Mathematics from Ambrose Alli University and an MBA.

However, the visible thread through his career is not simply numerical fluency; it is an instinct for the people and structures behind the numbers, the teams that execute, the clients who take risk, and the governance that determines whether growth lasts.

Across African markets, bank leadership is often a test of its endurance as strategy. Currency pressures, uneven access to capital, evolving regulation and the urgency of digital adoption create little room for abstraction.

The leaders who matter are those who remain calm in complexity while keeping institutions close to the real economy they serve, and Ohiwerei has seen it all.

Banking That Makes Long-Term Value Visible

The impact Ohiwerei is now positioned to shape will be measured not only by balance-sheet performance, but also by the quality of decisions made behind it.

In finance, every credit decision, advisory mandate and capital-markets transaction can influence what gets built, who participates and which risks are carried into the future.

Coronation Merchant Bank has sustainability integral to its business strategy and long-term development.

Its framework focuses on people, communities and the marketplace, while its lending approach includes review of transactions for ethical conduct and attention to economic, environmental and social considerations.

This is where ESG stops being a reporting exercise and becomes part of institutional character.

Nigeria’s Sustainable Banking Principles call on financial institutions to incorporate environmental and social considerations into business decision-making, seeking to avoid, minimise or offset negative impacts.

The principles also cover financial inclusion, human rights, women’s economic empowerment, governance, capacity building and reporting.

For a merchant bank, responsible finance can mean asking a more complete question before capital is committed: not only whether a transaction can generate returns, but whether it supports a durable economy.

The answer may be found in stronger businesses, better governance, resilient infrastructure or clients better prepared for an uncertain climate and market environment.

Building Trust, Capability, and Market Reach

Ohiwerei has outlined the direction in practical terms:

  • Deepen client relationships
  • Pursue new market opportunities
  • Strengthen advisory and capital-markets businesses
  • Enhance digital capabilities
  • Uphold high standards of governance and risk management.

These are not separate ambitions. Client trust makes advisory work possible; digital capability can make service more responsive; risk discipline protects both reputation and capital.

Together, they create the conditions in which a financial institution can remain useful when markets turn difficult.

The invitation, then, is broad. It extends to corporates looking for informed partners, investors seeking credible market intermediaries, regulators protecting system integrity, and teams inside the bank who must translate strategy into the quiet, repeatable work of service.

The next chapter will depend less on announcement-day optimism than on this collective ability to execute with care.

Legacy Begins With Disciplined Forward Motion

Ohiwerei’s legacy at Coronation Merchant Bank is still unwritten, as it should be. However,  the shape of the assignment is clear: steward a stronger institution into a future in which African finance must be both commercially assured and socially alert.

If that work is done well, the story will not be only about a new chief executive.

It will be about a bank helping to make long-term value, “ethical, resilient and shared”, more visible in the everyday architecture of African development.
