El Niño Risk Is Rising Fast

The world is likely heading into a new El Niño, but scientists are urging caution over headlines predicting a “super” event before the Pacific fully reveals its strength.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Centre said on May 14 that El Niño has an 82% chance of emerging between May and July 2026 and a 96% chance of continuing through the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026 – 27.

However, it also warned that peak strength remains uncertain, with no strength category above a 37% probability.

Why Scientists Are Being Careful

Nature reported that an El Niño is coming, according to models, but the question is when scientists will know whether it becomes unusually strong.

The World Meteorological Organisation also said El Niño is expected from mid-2026, with sea-surface temperatures rising rapidly in the equatorial Pacific. However, WMO noted that “super El Niño” is not a standard operational classification.

Africa’s Risk Is Practical, Not Abstract

For African households, the science translates into everyday risk: food prices, drought stress, flooding, disease outbreaks and energy pressure.

El Niño often reshapes rainfall patterns across regions. WMO says it is typically linked to increased rainfall in the Horn of Africa, while drought risks can rise in other parts of the world.

That matters for farmers planting maize in East Africa, water managers watching reservoirs in Southern Africa, and city authorities preparing for drainage failures in flood-prone communities.

Even without “super” status, El Niño can strain weak infrastructure and fragile food systems.

Preparedness Can Reduce The Damage

The better story is that climate forecasting gives governments time to act. Seasonal forecasts can support early warning, crop advice, water planning, public health alerts and disaster financing.

The warning is clear: waiting for certainty could be costly. Stronger forecasts will come later, but early preparedness should begin now.

Governments Must Plan Before Impacts Arrive

African governments, insurers, banks, food agencies and humanitarian actors should treat the current forecast as an early-action trigger, not a panic signal.

The priority is targeted preparation: protect farmers, monitor food stocks, stress-test urban drainage, prepare emergency health systems and align climate information with budget decisions.

Path Forward – Act Before Certainty Arrives

Africa should prepare for the impacts of El Niño while avoiding alarmist “super” narratives.

The practical path is early warning, resilient agriculture, climate-informed budgeting and community-level preparedness.

Whether this becomes strong or moderate, the safest strategy is to act before weather shocks become humanitarian and market shocks.
