"It's a distinct honour to join you at this year's Public Sector Forum - a gathering shaping the future of corporate responsibility, sustainability, and environmental stewardship in Nigeria's private sector. The theme, Energy Security and Decarbonization: Bridging the Gap for a Sustainable Future, captures one of the most pressing challenges of our time."

These were the words of Biodun Ogunleye, Honourable Commission for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lagos State

Urban Energy, Decarbonization, and Opportunity

Lagos State is transforming its energy ambitions, rapidly solarising hospitals, rolling out clean transit, and finalising an integrated energy policy.

The government's strategy underscores the urgent need: Lagos must fuel GDP growth at 7–10% annually to power Nigeria's dream, all while countering acute energy insecurity and leading Africa as a resilient, low-carbon city.

The Lagos Climate Action Blueprint

Driven by a new 2024 law and practical regulatory reforms, Lagos empowers leaders to generate, transmit, and regulate electricity.

Over 56 hospitals are already solarised, with the target set to reach half by mid-2026 of the total number of Lagos State Hospitals and Health Centres.

The city is deploying 40,000–42,000 solar street lighting systems now, ultimately aiming for 100,000 units citywide, ensuring every street will soon be brightly lit, safer, and emissions-free. Large-scale e-mobility and CNG networks will mean zero stranded vehicles, as the city rolls out electric and CNG-powered transport infrastructure.

Resilience, Safety, and Urban Prosperity

Solarising every street, hospital, and school will make Lagos safer and stronger. Emission reduction efforts combined with incentives for green investment will help attract capital, create jobs, and future-proof the city as a competitive hub.

Residents stand to inherit a city where energy security guarantees economic vitality and sustainable innovation.

Collaboration for Lasting Change

The Lagos government prioritises regulatory clarity, private sector partnerships, and infrastructure investment.

The plan: complete legal reforms, roll out distributed solar power, enable e-mobility, and support sustainable business, bridging energy security and decarbonization.

The call to action is clear: build resilient systems that deliver growth and safeguard the environment for all.

Path Forward – Solar, Transport, Partnerships Power Lagos Transition

Lagos is charting a bold low-carbon path, prioritising full solarisation, green transport expansion, and incentives for climate-smart investments.

This blueprint calls for deep regulatory reforms and vibrant public-private partnerships, anchoring inclusive urban growth on modern infrastructure and shared prosperity for all residents.
